Glaze Binder

In many cases, our ceramic glazes already contain a higher proportion of clayey components, which usually improve the grip of the unfired glaze (compared to pure frit glazes). Consequently, the addition of an extra glaze binder is not necessary or only necessary in specific cases.

Mainly colourless transparent and white glossy glazes are intended for the use of glaze binders, or if you prefer to apply the glaze by brush. We recommend organic additives as products for this application, which in many cases also act as suspending agents (combi-product). However, the addition of these products usually also requires the parallel addition of a biocide. Otherwise the binder effect of a longer stored glaze slip diminishes (usually with the formation of mould / algae).

The use of glaze binder increases the viscosity of the glaze slip - this property should be taken into account when using glazes for application by dipping, pouring over and spraying. Adding water "by feeling" results in a slurry with a too low solid proportion (usually too thin glaze application).

Increased use of glaze binders (and clayey components) can also have disadvantages. If these additives are added in a very high proportion, the wet state of the glaze slip is increased and the associated formation of a glaze layer is too low. Thus, the firing result can be unsatisfactory due to the thin glaze layer (in spite of the thick glaze slip).
