Application Technique

Our glazes can be used for all application techniques like brushing, pouring, dipping or spraying. The majority of our customers apply the earthenware glazes by brush. On the other hand, stoneware glazes are usually applied on the ceramic by pouring them over as because less glaze slurry is needed.

Since the firing results can be different depending on the application technique, for our glaze samples as shown here, we have decided to apply our earthenware glazes by brush and our stoneware glazes by pouring.

In order to ensure that the glaze is applied correctly, the bisque-fired body (usually at 950° C), must be free of dust and grease. Therefore, we recommend wiping off the body with a damp sponge before glazing.

If applying the glaze with a brush, we always use a soft flat brush made of goat hair or synthetic hair. A bristle brush would leave an uneven glaze surface. The application is carried out in 2 - 4 layers (2 layers mostly for a transparent glaze, 4 layers for a metal effect glaze), whereby the individual layers should dry before another layer is applied. In order to achieve a smooth glaze application, a crosswise brush stroke is recommended. Please do not dab the glaze.

For application by pouring we have glazed our stoneware glazes "overlapping" , i.e. the ceramic was completely covered in one process, which corresponds to a thin layer thickness. Subsequently, the glaze, which corresponds to higher layer thicknesses, was applied overlapping twice on the pot again. This shows which play of colours can be achieved with our stoneware glazes!
